Mozzaz Transforms Athlete’s Health Screenings with HAS 2.0 at World Winter Games

The Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025, held from March 8–15, marked a global celebration for inclusion, athletic excellence, and health equity.  Among the standout initiatives was the global unveiling of the Healthy Athletes System 2.0 (HAS 2.0), powered by Mozzaz, a CLH Technologies, LLC company, a pioneering force in digital health solutions. This cutting-edge platform advanced health screenings, referral management, and data administration for 1,500 athletes representing 102 nations, propelling the mission to foster wellness and embrace individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

Advancing Athlete Healthcare with HAS 2.0

Since its inception in 1997, Special Olympics Healthy Athletes® has delivered free, health screenings across seven essential disciplines—podiatry, physiotherapy, preventative medicine, audiology, vision care, dentistry, and mental health . These services not only provide vital care but also help close the gap in healthcare access for individuals with IDD, who often face systemic barriers and neglect. Now, with the launch of Healthy Athletes System (HAS)2.0—developed in close partnership with Mozzaz—the program enters a new era. By digitizing workflows, streamlining data collection, and improving accessibility, HAS 2.0 brings enhanced precision and efficiency to athlete care on a global scale.

“HAS 2.0 leverages advanced technology to deliver seamless health screenings and referrals, even in offline settings. Mozzaz’s platform helps ensure our athletes’ health data drives meaningful outcomes globally,” said Jake Neely, Senior Vice President of Technology and Data Science at Special Olympics International.

Launched globally at this year’s Special Olympics World Winter Games, HAS 2.0 streamlined screenings by enabling clinicians and volunteers to use digital tools for real-time data entry across all disciplines. The platform’s cloud-based system ensured secure data storage, seamless reporting, and efficient referral management, allowing healthcare professionals to provide tailored health recommendations and connect athletes to follow-up care– all while ensuring data integrity and privacy.  With over 2 million screenings conducted globally since the Healthy Athletes program began, HAS 2.0 is poised to accelerate this impact—enhancing efficiency, deepening insights, and driving long-term health equity for athletes around the world.

Rini Gahir, Mozzaz Co-founder, expressed pride in the collaboration: “We are incredibly proud to support Special Olympics International’s mission of inclusion and health equity. Being part of HAS 2.0 and witnessing its impact at the World Games and across the world is a privilege, as we help empower athletes to thrive through innovative technology.”

Mozzaz’s Role: Technology for Impact

Mozzaz, renowned for its expertise in digital health solutions, tailored HAS 2.0 to meet the unique needs of the Special Olympics community. The platform incorporates several key features:

  • Mobile-Friendly Interface: Volunteers and clinicians use tablets to record screening data, simplifying workflows during high-volume events like the World Games.

  • Offline Access: HAS 2.0 supports offline functionality, allowing screenings and referral management to proceed seamlessly in areas with unreliable or no internet connectivity, with data syncing automatically once a connection is restored.

  • Referral Management: The platform facilitates tracking and managing referrals, ensuring athletes receive timely follow-up care for identified health issues, such as the need for vision correction or dental treatment.

  • Real-Time Analytics: HAS 2.0 delivers instant insights into health trends, enabling organizers to identify urgent needs and track outcomes across disciplines.

  • Data Security and Compliance: Adhering to global privacy standards, Mozzaz safeguards sensitive health data, fostering trust among athletes, families, and stakeholders.

  • Scalability: Designed for global events, HAS 2.0 is also adaptable for local and regional events, ensuring consistent care worldwide.

These features, particularly offline access and referral management, ensured Mozzaz could support the screening of thousands of athletes in Turin, delivering critical interventions like corrective eyewear, dental care referrals, and mental wellness strategies, even in challenging connectivity environments. For many athletes, these screenings and subsequent referrals represent their only access to specialized healthcare, making HAS 2.0 a vital resource.

Impact at the Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025

The World Games theme, “The Future is Here,” showcased athletes competing in eight sports, from alpine skiing to floorball. Behind the scenes, HAS 2.0 made a transformative impact. Supported by partners like the Golisano Foundation and Lions Clubs International Foundation, the program addressed health disparities through screenings that identified issues like untreated vision, hearing loss, or podiatric conditions, with referrals managed efficiently to ensure follow-up care.

“HAS 2.0 is a game-changer for the health of Special Olympics athletes. Mozzaz’s technology enables us to deliver inclusive screenings and referrals that empower athletes to live healthier, more autonomous lives.” said Dr. Brittany Routh, Director of Healthy Athletes and Health Services at Special Olympics International.

Athletes benefit from screenings and referrals that enhance their overall well-being. Participants have access to HAS 2.0 screenings ensuring their health needs are met. The data collected via HAS 2.0 also informs advocacy efforts and supports policy changes to improve healthcare access for individuals with IDD. Mozzaz’s robust technology ensures accurate data is easily captured and with advanced referral tracking, laying the groundwork for future health initiatives.

A Vision for the Future

The successful debut of HAS 2.0 at the World Games is a steppingstone towards a global health ecosystem for Special Olympics athletes. Mozzaz and Special Olympics aim to expand the platform’s integration into more events and local programs, ensuring consistent, high-quality care and referral management worldwide. The platform’s data insights will also drive research and advocacy, addressing systemic healthcare barriers.

As Special Olympics Sargeant Shriver Global Messenger, Margaret Turley declared during the World Games, “I want to leave you all with a challenge: let’s work together to expand and strengthen Healthy Athletes in every corner of the world. Take what you learn here beyond Turin and help build a future where every Special Olympics athlete has access to the life-changing health care they deserve.” Mozzaz’s work with HAS 2.0 embodies this vision, leveraging technology to promote inclusion and empower athletes.
