Over the past few months, Mozzaz has exhibited at the HIMSS Patient Experience Digital Series. Each monthly episode in the series has a specific theme relating to patient experience, and February’s episode was all about how to foster meaningful communication among patients and caregivers (if you haven’t checked out our on-demand session yet, you can watch it here). This episode’s keynotes offered valuable insights and perspectives into the importance of communication in our industry, but, regardless of the message, three key takeaways seemed to continuously emerge.

1. Patient – provider dialogue is a large opportunity to connect and nurture empathy.

Technology tends to get a bad reputation for being dehumanizing, but it is quite the contrary. When implemented effectively, technology creates additional channels for valuable communication like secure messaging and televisits. These digital channels for connection provide additional opportunities for providers to build empathetic relationships with their patients, increasing trust.

2. Meaningful communication between patients and their providers is vital for optimal patient outcomes and experiences.

Digital solutions like remote patient monitoring, allow care teams to stay up to date on important patient data, collected from self-assessments and devices. Additionally, tools like patient journals and symptom trackers make in-person appointments more effective. Less time spent on tedious tasks like manual data collection means more time for meaningful communication between patients and their care teams.

3. Collaboration and communication among caregivers and care teams is just as imperative for high-quality care.

Patient care ecosystems involve increasingly more providers, specialists, caregivers, and support team members. Keeping those care professionals connected can be challenging, but is key to successful patient outcomes and experiences. This is another area for digital optimization. Sharing patient information securely is much easier and efficient when technology is employed to help. In fact, CMS is even implementing a new rule requiring health organizations to electronically send notifications when admissions, transfers, or discharges (ADT) occur. Aside from ADT events, there is a larger opportunity for collaboration and information sharing, encouraging 360-degree patient care.
